A quick introduction to the Changeling lore

Once upon a time, the world was full of magic and wonder. The Dreaming, the realm of imagination, gave birth to the Fair Folk with the power of Glamour, the creative spark. The Fair Folk spent centuries living near the human race, some cursing them, others blessing them, all making human lives far more exciting. But then… a plague swept across Europe, and the misery and despair grew too much for the Fair Folk to handle. The Glamour they harvested from human dreams wasn’t strong enough anymore.

The Nobility of the Fair Folk, the Sidhe, pointy-eared and beautiful, declared that the waking world was no longer suited for the Fae, and departed back to their ancestral homelands in the Dreaming. But as the commoners prepared to follow, they found the gates of horn and ivory sealed shut. They were trapped in a world that no longer had a place for them.

The commoner fae who remained took a desperate chance. The Ritual of the Changeling Way, a powerful magic that permanently bonded their souls to the human race. Now, certain human children are instead born with faerie souls, making them Changelings, not quite human, not quite fae, struggling to live in both worlds. The noble courts of the Sidhe are mostly a memory, with the commoners finding their path. Yet, they still need the Glamour produced by human imaginations to fuel their magics and survive, or else their faerie souls will wither, and they’ll just be an empty husk of a human being.

Recently, a handful of Sidhe have returned to Earth, from a sealed palace buried underneath a Californian mountain, and conflicts between these lost nobles and the commoners who have learned to live without them are sure to come.
